Words That Connect Ideas

  • Then tells what happens next: “I put on my shoes, then I go outside.”

  • Choose the connector that shows sequence, contrast, or addition in each sentence.

Soft C: The /s/ Sound

  • The letter c often makes the soft /s/ sound when the next letter is e, i, or y.
  • In face, c comes before e and sounds like /s/; the word names the front of your head.
  • In nice, c comes before e; in city, c comes before i, and both c sounds are /s/.
  • Say face, nice, and city slowly, then listen for the soft /s/ sound made by c.
