Introduction to SAP Preparation

Objective: Prepare SAP from CMC using ECH as a crosslinker.

Introduction to SAP Preparation
2

Experimental Procedure

  • Dissolve CMC in NaOH solution at 5.01% w/w, stir at 600 rpm.
  • Add 5 ml ECH dropwise, stir for 1 hour, then heat to 60°C for 16 hours.
  • Wash gel with DI water or acetic acid until colorless, then precipitate with EtOH/Acetone.
Experimental Procedure

Absorption Test Results

  • CMC shows water absorption of 336.24–694.23 g/g, saline absorption of 95–114 g/g.
  • Na-CMC achieves highest water absorption at 534.14 g/g after drying.
  • SAP absorption in saline: 60.33–70.04 g/g, lower than in water due to charge screening.

Key Findings

  • SAP synthesis successful with ECH crosslinking under alkaline conditions.
  • Post-synthesis processes (precipitation, drying) significantly affect absorption properties.
  • CMC absorbs more saline than SAP due to its linear polymer structure.

Conclusion & Applications

  • SAP from CMC shows high water absorption, suitable for hygiene products.
  • Saline absorption is limited, indicating use in low-ion environments.
  • Optimizing ECH quantity and post-processing can enhance SAP performance.
